In the southern island of Kyushu Japan lies the coastal town of Beppu, well known for being one of the preeminent “Onsen-Gai” (hot spring town).
Here we designed a ryokan-inn with the concept “machi(town) = street”.
To embody the mixed-use experience of an onsen-gai, we created a tessellation of indoor and outdoor spaces.
The merging of spaces captures the fluid transition through human-scale space while meandering the streets.
A series of deep hip-gabled eaves run along the perimeter of the surrounding townscape, to create a seamless transition to the surrounding Onsen-gai.
The upper floors use a ripple-textured crushed scallop shell mixed stucco for the façade, to resonate with the gentle ripples of the ocean near the site.
The interior is designed as a collection of particles or elements of craftwork, such as bamboo work, handmade washi, local pottery techniques (usukiyaki), and Bungo style tie-dying, introduced with the help of local craftsmen.
This ryokan-inn became not just an accommodation facility, but also our folk art museum.

日本の温泉街の代名詞ともいえる別府に、「街＝ストリート」をテーマにした旅館をデザインした。
温泉街の複合的体験、変化に富んだヒューマンスケールの空間の連鎖の内包をめざして、内部空間と外部空間とがモザイク状の混在に挑戦した。
寄棟屋根が連なる軒の深い低層部で既存の街とスムーズに連続し、上層部はホタテ貝の殻を入れた吹付材に特殊ローラーで凹凸をつけ、海のサザ波と響きあうデザインとした。
竹細工、手漉き和紙、臼杵焼、豊後絞りなどの当地の材料を用いて、当地の職人とともに、この旅館のための一品をデザインし、それらの粒子の集合体として、内部空間をデザインした。
その意味でこれは旅館であると同時に、われわれの「民芸」のミュージアムである。
