In my architecture, I am attempting to reconnect buildings with the bodies of the people that spend time in each building. For example, think about the relationship you have with your clothes. Your body has a firm connection with your clothes. No matter how intensely you move, your clothes respond to this in a flexible manner, your clothes absorb your perspiration when you perspire, and keep you warm on cold days. In this manner, here is an intimate connection between your body and your clothes. Your body needs your clothes, and your clothes would have no purpose if you did not wear them. The objective of my “Ishin-densin(telepathic comunication)” exhibit at Biennale that is made from bamboo is to reconnect the human body with architecture. Bamboo is much more flexible than concrete, and it is softer. In my “Bamboo House” in China (2002), I challenged the potential of bamboo, and attempted to reconnect architecture with the human body by using bamboo to construct the building.
However, the bamboo that I used in the “Bamboo House” had a diameter of six centimeters, and does not easily bend or bow. The bamboo that I used at this Biennale has been split to a width of three centimeters, making it easy to bow or bend. Architecture that is made from smaller pieces of bamboo has given the architecture characteristics that are quite a bit closer to clothes.
