Shang Xia Paris Store

8 Sèvres Road, 75006 Paris, France
08/2013
Shop
134.3 m2

We conceived of a cloud-like space made of thin ceramic panels. Historically, ceramic has been a crucial element that forms Chinese culture. Chinese ceramic had also long been an object of admiration in Europe. In the products of Shang Xia, ceramic plays a special role as well. In this shop, very thin ceramic panels (40*150) of as many as 6,000 are suspended from the ceiling to cover the entire space. The glossy white face, unique to ceramic, created a lighting state you might find in the Impressionists’ pointillistic painting and you feel staying in a cloud.

Susa International Station

Susa, Turin, Piemonte, Italy
to be completed 2019
Train station for local and high speed train
22,218 m2

Susa is a small city located in the middle of a valley within the Italian Alps, near the border with France. A long time ago, this strategic position made the Susa valley an important gateway between the two countries, however, over the decades, with the growing hegemony of air transportation, it has become just another valley. A renewed interest in the development of the high-speed trains is now giving the Susa valley another chance to recover its strategic role.

In this project, the station is like an extension of its surrounding spaces. The building rises from the ground as an exterior spiraled promenade that achieves all-around vista of the valley, a panoramic balcony where locals, tourists and transit travelers can equally enjoy the landscape. Our aim is to avoid the new station becoming a stranger within the valley. With the design recalling the surrounding mountains and not prioritizing any of its facades, the station has the intention to tie and merge within the surrounding alpine environment.

V&A at Dundee

Dundee, Scotland UK
to be completed 2016
Museum, Learning Studios, Museum Shop, Café, Restauran
8,500 m2

The chosen location for the museum gives us the opportunity, almost a necessity, of creating a system and a network of public spaces, each with a different and singular character, connecting the existing city centre of Dundee to the new cultural facility embodied by the V&A.
This network of quality public spaces includes the Railway Station’s square (which will be renovated in the near future), the Urban Plaza proposed on the east of the Discovery (both in direct relation with the river and still part of the urban fabric) and finally the new Museum Plaza which will reshape the riverside of Dundee, creating a new focal into the river and which will be not only a superb open space for museum’s temporary exhibition, “summer pavilions” and events, but also a real public square for all citizens and visitors to enjoy the river.
The museum itself with its large and open public hall will be part of the new system of public spaces, becoming a sort of covered public square where people can go and enjoy the warm feeling of this welcoming space, not only to visit the great exhibition of the Museum, but also just for shopping at the museum store, for going to dinner at the restaurant or for having a drink at the café, similarly to what happens in any successful lively public square.
This will generate a strong integration between outside and inside the museum, creating an offer which will be directed not only to all the visitors the museum will attract form outside Dundee, but also to Dundee’s citizens, who will be able to appreciate the museum spaces as a true new piece of their city and will be invited to inhabit it as such.
The relationship of the museum building with the exterior spaces and especially with the new riverfront promenade, creates an even stronger physical integration: where the “museum plaza” meets the building, its floor transforms into a wooden deck which literally intersects the museum in the middle and then organically reconnects to the existing waterfront on the east side of it. This on one side creates an engaging and dynamic relation between the deck promenade and the building and on the other side avoids the perception of the museum as a self-standing extraneous object in the river. A feeling which would be unavoidable if the promenade completely surrounded the museum on its exterior.

The main hall is a welcoming and warm social space suitable for different flexible uses such as concerts, art workshop, installation and exhibition of big scale art pieces, and other events.
A large staircase along the hall façade, entirely open toward the full height space, connects to the exhibition spaces on the upper level of the building where the Scotland National Design centre, will host semi-permanent international and Scottish design collections, and the main 1,200 sqm gallery (a highly flexible space) will be the biggest exhibition gallery in Scotland.
The DIA centre located above the main entrance and facing the main hall, will include a practitioner hall with its double height on the mezzanine, this will be visible to the visitors from a privileged point of view, without interfering and disturbing the designers at work.
The museum also includes a café’ with a terrace looking over the Tay and a restaurant suspended over the river on the front of the museum, which will have a spectacular view of the river.

EPFL Espace et pavillions sur place Cosandey

Lausanne,Switzerland
2012-
Reception venue, Exhibition space, Music hall and Restaurant

The project site is a vast lawn, a void in the middle of the EPFL campus. It disconnects the North side of the campus (where the Esplanade plaza, social heart of the campus, and the tram station are) from the students’ residential area on the South. Also it separates the dense West part of the campus with the currently evolving East side that is articulated around the impressive presence of the Learning Center.
By transforming the site into a place where students, professors and visitors will pleasantly pass by every day enjoying the new cultural activities that will take place under this roof, we are confident that this whole area will become a central hub within the campus and will bring a more social and cultural dimension to the EPFL.

Progetto Manifattura - Green Innovation Factory

Rovereto, Trento, Italy
2009-2018(expected)
Manufacturing, Offices, Research labs, Auditorium, Gym, Learning Center, Greenhouse, Public Roof Garden, Café Shop, Café, Restaurant
approx. 50,000 m2

Progetto Manifattura – Green Innovation Factory is transforming a 9-hectare (22-acre) historic tobacco facility into a business, innovation and research hub for green building, renewable energy, and environmental technology.

Manifattura is located at a key point in the valley, where the Leno River practically flows into the Adige River, and is clearly visible from all the mountains that surround the area. The perception of the Manifattura from the mountains, a point of view from top to bottom , is the most typical, and it represent therefore the way the buildings is normally perceived, which is a most important to take into consideration. Generally, when people think about the idea of a "Landmark", an object that marks the territory by being visible from afar, it is common to think of a vertical element. This is a necessary strategy when we are in a "flatland". Where flat and horizontal directions prevail, something willing to be visible must be higher than the rest, and verticality creates this strength.
In this project instead, exactly the opposite happens: the perception is that of a point of view from top to bottom. Here a vertical mark would have no power and would get little visibility. The planar direction becomes the most powerful sign in this complex condition, and therefore the possibility of creating a new type of sign: a Horizontal Landmark, site specific and which merges into the landscape and at the same time becomes visible in all its strength from the surroundings.

The second concept that characterizes Manifattura Project comes from analysing the landscape in a closer scale: reading of the lines and shapes of the territory. The Manifattura complex sits in the valley around Rovereto and it is surrounded by the beautiful vineyards that characterize this area and that appear to be to the eye of a visitor like well-defined areas of thin and delicate parallel lines. The directionality of the green roof of the new buildings originates from the same idea of integrating the project to its territory with the lines of the vineyards. This results in a large green roofscape covering the production spaces below and integrating the new buildings with the surrounding nature. This approach allows us to give back to the city of Rovereto green space that had long been occupied by the factory and made inaccessible to the public.
We wanted to re-open the space of the Manifattura to the city while ensuring the necessary security for the production buildings, and doing so not through physical barriers but gradual changes in levels and green slopes which gives us the opportunity to create the new large accessible green space.

The project includes a public school, an elementary school, housing and a gymnasium. The site has an unique history. Alternately fortification, Industrial Zone linked with the rails network, this ever-changing urban fringe is gradually becoming an urban district in its own right.
The conversion of the warehouse Macdonald represents an opportunity to reconquer this unique territory in Paris. The specific morphology of the warehouse, its gigantism, witness of a bygone era, gives us the chance to write on this palimpsest a new urban and architectural history which is strongly oriented towards sustainable development.
How to create a identity of the neighborhood, landscape that affirm the metropolitan scale?
How to maintain the character of the superstructure while opening the building to the neighborhood?
The architectural expression is created by smooth lines that amplifies the expression and the use of the existing building.
The program is complex and multifaceted, the building is responding with unity and uniformity in response across the existing building.
The project consists of following structural elements:
- A roof which unites the different functions
- Filters that make up the facades
- A gap which articulates the different programs
