We were interested in the way Valextra displays their products individually, bringing attention to each product; as opposed to the usual long shelves with lined up products we find in the usual retail. This brought us to conceive a retail concept where each displayed item would occupy its own space. We had the ambition to have a shop conceived only by the addition of each of the items individual space, and that visitors would roam among them as if walking in a forest. Following this narrative, we formalized these individual spaces for each item as full height raw wooden planks. Essentially these wooden planks are the only elements creating the space.

The choice of wood was evident, since our aim was to create an abstract forest-like kind of experience. We chose for natural wooden planks, keeping their bark and original shape. This establishes a very intense and interesting contrast with the sophisticated simplicity of the Valextra designs. The counters in natural stone appear as mineral objects, like treasures discovered among the trees. The textile used for the furniture brings a feminine touch that recalls the intimacy of a secret boudoir. All these materials aim to create a sense of romantic escapism, a fantasy far from the reality of Milan’s hectic urban life. The scent of the wood that perfumes the whole space is particularly pleasant and charming when one steps into this space. We can suddenly feel a certain comfort leaving behind the chaos of the hectic city.

Nagaoka sees some of the heaviest snowfall in Japan. We designed a warm house made of wood and membrane, evoking a paper lantern in the snow, and sandwiched the wooden structure with two kinds of membranes using glass cloth as the base material. This fills the room with a gentle light, and adds a warm color to the snowy landscape.

豪雪地域長岡に、雪の中の行灯のような膜と木の暖かい家を作った。木造の構造体をガラスクロスを基材とする二種類の膜ではさみこむことによって、行灯のようなやわらかな質の光で室内を満たし、また雪国の風景にもあたたかい色どりを与えることができた。

We renovated a wooden house and garden built in Tokyo before World War II, transforming it into a shared residence for international students.
While preserving the exterior and structure, we redesigned the house to accommodate up to eight people by installing partitions, shoji screens, and lighting. Using washi throughout the house proved an effective way to gently connect all the rooms and spaces.

戦前の木造住宅を海外の留学生のための庭つきのシェアハウスへと改修した。外観と構造を保存しながら、8人が共同生活をする木の香りがするシェアハウスへ間仕切り、障子、照明器具などを作った。和紙を全面的に用いることで空間を切断せず、やわらかくつなぐことが可能となった。

Arte Sella is a holy place for environmental artworks in Italy. In this beautiful forest we created a spherical pavilion of 4 meter-high by assembling pieces of solid (Japanese) larch, each in the thickness of 58mm, without using a single metal fitting or glue. It is an experiment of a new “democratic” way of construction that proves a big and relaxed space can be built by the work of human hands alone with small unified components.

This natural and modernistic pavilion was realized in the precision of 1mm, which was the product of collaboration among Professor Marco Imperadori at Politecnico di Milano, Marco Clozza of D3WOOD, and Jun Sato, structural engineer, Ri-Legno,wooden construction company.

イタリアの環境アートの聖地、アルテ・セラの森の中で58mm厚のカラマツの無垢材を組み合わせ、金物も糊も使わずに高さ4mの球形のパビリオンを作った。単一の小さなユニットを集積させ、人間の手だけで大きなゆるい空間を獲得しようとするデモクラティックな建設方法の実験である。
ミラノ工科大学のマルコ・インペラドーリ教授、D3WOODのマルコ・クロッツァ、構造エンジニアの佐藤淳、そして木造施工会社のRi-Legnoとのコラボレーションにより、1mmの精度で作られたナチュラルでコンテンポラリーなパビリオンが可能となった。

We presented it as a soft, sustainable installation made with cloth named Breath, which has a function of adsorbing air pollutants.

By adding pleating to Breath, we increased the surface area of the cloth in order to enhance its ability of absorbing pollutants. In this way, we were able to obtain flexibility to respond to any kind of organic form.

The overall shape was simulated by 3D CAD of Dassault Systèmes, and materialized with carbon fiber and flexible joints produced from a 3D printer.

The installation was prepared originally for the event of Dassault and unitized later. A single unit of this installation is designed to absorb volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the number of cars as many as 90,000 a year.

大気汚染物質を吸着する機能を持つ布 – Breath – を用いて作られた、やわらかく、サステイナブルなインスタレーション。

Breath にプリーツ加工を加えることで、布の表面積を増大させて、汚染物質の吸着機能を増大させ、さらに、どんなオーガニックな形態にも対応できる、自由度を獲得することができた。

全体の形状は、Dassault Systèmesの３DCADによってシミュレートし、カーボン・ファイバーと３Dプリントで作られたフレキシブルジョイントを併用して実現した。

インスタレーションはまず、Dassault社のイベントに用いられたが、ユニット化され、このインスタレーションひとつで揮発性有機化合物（VOCｓ）を、一年間に乗用車9万台分吸着できる。

The Clave Archive is private museum housing the works of Antoni Clave (1913-2005), an artist representing 20th century Spanish art.

Inspired by the powerful texture of Clave’s work, including oil painting and collage, we decided to spread washi over sheets of expanded aluminum mesh, generating a new kind of texture with a sense of solidity and transparency. We used the sheets as screens throughout the interior of the building.

The screens were prepared in western France by Yasuo Kobayashi, a washi manufacturer, whose studio is in Niigata. During the process of washi making, the mesh sheet is soaked in a starchy liquid made from kozo (mulberry) and sunset hibiscus. Various levels of transparency were achieved by controlling and adjusting thickness of the solution and the way washi is dried.

20世紀のスペイン美術を代表するアーティスト、アントニー・クラーベ（1913-2005）の作品を収蔵する、プライベート・ミュージアム。
油彩とコラージュを使用するクラーベの作品の力強い質感にインスパイヤされ、アルミ製のメッシュ（エキスパンドメタル）に和紙をまぶすことで、立体的でしかも透明感のある新しい質感のスクリーンを生み出し、空間のすべてを、そのスクリーンでおおった。
スクリーン製作は、新潟の手漉き和紙作家、小林康生さんが、フランス西部にある施工会社のアトリエで行った。和紙製造の過程で生まれるコウゾの繊維とトロロアオイの混じったドロドロの溶液を、エキスパンドメタルにまぶし、その溶液の濃度、乾燥方法を調整しながら、様々な透明度を獲得した。

Hekikai Shinkin Bank Misono | Kengo Kuma and Associates

The Hekikai Shin-yo Kinko is located at the center of Nagoya city. It is an office building for the bank covered with wooden lattice that produces warm and humane atmosphere.
We installed a green space named Green Void at a point facing the intersection and made it as a cubic green that joins the ground and the rooftop. Our planning aimed to give comfort to the town with this green, while design it to be viewed and enjoyed from every corner in the building.
Facing the same road stands Misonoza, another project of ours which is the most famous theater in Nagoya. The louvers applied at the façade of the theater are laid out diagonally and resonate with the wooden louvers for the exterior of the bank. Wooden louvers not only create a gentle rhythm to the streets but also take in foresty sunbeam inside the building.

名古屋の中心部にたつ、木の格子で覆われた、ヒューマンで暖かみのある、金融機関のためのオフィスビル。
交差点に面して、グリーンヴォイドと名づけた大地から屋上までをつなぐ立体的な緑を設け、都市に対しては緑が安らぎを与え、また、ビルの中のあらゆるスペースから、このグリーンヴォイドを楽しめるようなプランニングとした。
同じ通りに面し、われわれが設計した名古屋を代表する御園座がたつ。御園座のファサードのダイアゴナルなルーバーと、響き合う形で、外壁の木ルーバーをデザインし、木ルーバーは、通りにやわらかいリズムを創造し、さらに室内には木漏れ日のような環境を作り出す。

According to the old Chinese story “Seven Wise Men of the Bamboo Grove,” the grove has healing powers. In order to elicit the feeling of dining within a bamboo grove, we used bamboo (také in Japanese) everywhere and in as many ways possible, creating an expansive Japanese restaurant here in Hong Kong. We were able to produce a restaurant as a garden, rather than a restaurant simply as an interior space.

竹（Také）という素材を徹底的に使うことで、竹林の中で食事をするような、開放的でフレキシブルな日本レストランをデザインした。
「竹林の七賢」という故事にあるように、竹林には、都市とは対照的な、人を癒す力がある。インテリアとしてのレストランではなく、庭としてのレストランを作ることができた。

The positions are available in Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai office.

KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES (Tokyo, Beijing and Shanghai) and KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES Europe (Paris) invite students and young architects to apply for an internship. You will be working as a part of the design team on the different scale levels within various projects. The position is a full time, for the period of 1 month up to 3 months.
It is necessary to mention your dates of availability in the letter, as well as your age, gender, nationality / citizenship and available languages (with level) in the CV. Nagoya has long cultivated performance art and artists and is known as the place of entertainment within Japan. Mizono-za, is located in the center of Nagoya’s theater district and we were tasked with reviving the historic space. The building is a new and unusual complex in that it integrates a shopping center facing a main road, as well apartments above the theater. The former theatre had walls of Namako-kabe (black square tiles with raised white grout), and we used this as the motif of our design developing into a glamorously illuminated façade that could match the “flower” of the city. As for the interior, we looked back to the old Misono-za by using vermillion as the basic color. A wide corridor stretching from the foyer to the main entrance was covered with vermillion helping to enhance this bright and beautiful theater that represents Nagoya.

「芸所」といわれる名古屋の演劇文化の中心、御園座を再生した。
道路に面した商業施設、劇場上部の集合住宅との複合によって、新しい形の複合型劇場を実現した。旧御園座のナマコ壁のデザインをヒントにして、「都市の華」にふさわしいはなやかな光のファサードで、建物を覆った。
インテリアでは、旧御園座に使われていた朱色を基本色とし、ホワイエから、エントランスに到るまで、朱色で覆いつくすことで、名古屋という街にふさわしい、明るくはなやかな劇場が実現した。

On the hill overlooking Saint Victoire in Southern France that Cezanne much loved by Paul Cézanne, we made a pavilion as organic as a tree. By gradually lifting off the planks of ipe in 20 mm-thick with excellent durability, we achieved a floating kind of lightness. We supported the transparent structure by sandwiching a 4 mm-thick stainless plate between the planks. We tried abstraction of the trees in the way Cézanne drew Saint Victoire.

セザンヌが愛した南仏のサント・ヴィクトワール山を望む丘の上に、樹木のような有機的なパヴィリオンを作った。20mm厚の耐久性に優れた イペ材の板を、少しずつずらして持ち出していくことで、浮遊するような軽やかさを獲得することができた。板と板の間に4mmのステンレスプレートをはさみこむことで、この透明な構造体を支えることができた。セザンヌがサント・ヴィクトワール山を抽象化したように、樹木の抽象化を試みた。

We designed a forest-like house by combining cypress columns with a cross-sectional dimension of 120×120.
By inserting smaller horizontal sections of 120×213 between the columns, we created a soft and strong load-bearing screen that filters solar radiation and produces an effect like sunlight filtering through the forest
120×120 Forest is a new kind of wooden house that simultaneously shelters those inside while also opening up to the streets.

守られながら、しかも街に対して開かれた、新しいタイプの木の家が生まれた。

We designed a banquet hall in the center of a busy city (Nagoya-shi) covered with a large roof fostering a warm and communal atmosphere.

We didn’t want a building like a closed box, so we placed the entire structure under a sloped roof to express the space like a well-preserved forest.

By attaching long pieces of cedar and larch, we added a rhythmic variation to the ceiling and the wall. The space was further enlivened by the passing of light through the ceiling like komorebi, or light filtering down through the trees in a forest.

大都市（名古屋）の中に、大屋根で覆われた、暖かくてヒューマンなバンケットホールを作った。

ハコ型を避け、全体を勾配屋根で覆うことによって、やさしくまもられた、森のような空間を生成することができた。

杉やカラマツ材のピースを使って、天井や壁にリズムを与え、さらに天井からのコモレビを導入することによって、空間に森のような生命を与えた。

駅舎

東京の環状鉄道・山手線の新駅の駅舎で、東京オリンピック（2020）にあわせて、完成する予定。駅に隣接するJRの操車場跡地（約13ha）を利用して、東京の南東の副都市となる大規模な再開発が計画されており、新駅はこの再開発の顔として計画された。

地域に開かれた広場としての駅舎をコンセプトとし、膜構造（membrane structure）の大屋根の下に、かつての日本の駅にはない、開放的で明るい空間が広がっている。

鉄骨と木の集成材を組み合わせて作られたフレームに、半透明のテフロン膜が張られた姿は、現在のテクノロジーの産物であると同時に、障子、折り紙などの日本文化のエッセンスを想起させ、2020年の日本の顔となることが期待されている。
